Hutong's 'Comfortably Numb' cocktails features a Sichuan pepper rim!

The Shanghai Bar at Hutong has always been a popular place for guests to enjoy a cocktail or glass of Champagne before or after dining with us. Also open to non-diners, the bar has indeed become a destination in its own right, thronged with a lively clientele of local business-people, international visitors and Londoners celebrating special occasions.

Now guests can enjoy the Shanghai Bar for longer, as it’s now open continuously from when the restaurant opens at midday until it closes at 11pm. The bar previously closed between lunch and dinner service but demand has been such that we are happy to now throw open its doors all day.

Hutong’s Shanghai Bar is known for its unique list of Chinese medicinal cocktails, which draw on the centuries-old traditions of Chinese medicine for inspiration. In Chinese medicine myriad herbs, spices, fruits, vegetables and seeds are believed to hold medicinal powers, curing or at least alleviating almost every imaginable illness. We make no such claims for our cocktails, but we do believe that guests will at the very least enjoy their effects!

Pictured here is the Comfortably Numb, our most popular cocktail made with Stolichnaya vanilla vodka, fresh chilli, Szechuan pepper honey, lychee liqueur and fresh lime juice. Its ‘medicinal’ ingredient is Szechuan pepper (Chuan jiao), which according to belief, ‘Warms, disperses cold, alleviates spleen or stomach cold from deficiency patterns’.  What we do know for sure is that the Szechuan pepper rim has an exhilarating, tingling effect on the lips, which guests love!

No reservations are taken or needed for the Shanghai Bar but access may be limited at busy times. For bar and restaurant opening hours please visit the About Us page.
