Our exciting plans for Chinese New Year

Posted on January 9, 2015

As you would expect when it comes to celebrating what to many people is the most important festival in the Chinese calendar, Chinese New Year at Hutong will be a spectacular affair steeped in tradition.

The festivities will begin the night before on Wednesday 18th February with a Reunion Dinner, traditionally held by families to celebrate together and bring luck for the year ahead and featuring a whole fish centrepiece. Available at dinner only alongside the main menu, our Reunion Dinner menu will feature five courses including a whole steamed cod with Sichuan peppercorn.

At dinner on Thursday 19th February, Chinese New Year itself, a ‘Double Happiness’ menu featuring the customary Lo Hei mixed raw seafood salad  - salmon, yellow tail and shredded abalone tossed with assorted vegetables and sweet plum sauce – will replace the regular a la carte and Signature menus. The menu will also include our signature Red Lantern soft-shell crab and Boneless Dover sole braised in coriander-vinegar sauce.

During the evening guests will be able to enjoy a traditional lion dance and be given noise-makers to help the lion ward off the nian or evil spirits. Chinese musicians will entertain guests in both wings of the restaurant, and each table will be given a ‘red pocket’ with their bill which will contain a gift – in one lucky table’s case, their entire bill will be complimentary!

In the weeks leading up to Chinese New Year, we will be featuring more stories about the traditions surrounding it and how we will be honouring them at Hutong. For now, you can browse the Reunion Dinner and Double Happiness menus, and book your table, on our new website.
